The Black Riders – An Upcoming Saga Expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

“Bilbo made no mistake in choosing his heir, though he little thought how important it would prove. I am afraid you are right. The Ring will not be able to stay hidden in the Shire much longer; and for your own sake, as well as for others, you will have to go, and leave the name of Baggins behind you.”
–Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring

Fantasy Flight Games have announced the first of a series of Saga Expansions for their Living Card Game, The Lord of the Rings. The first two Saga expansions saw the players following and interacting in the events of the Hobbit, aiding Bilbo Baggins in his adventures.

The Black Riders recreates a selection of dramatic event as told in the first half of J.R.R Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. It is the first of a series of Saga expansions that eventually will allow players to replay Frodo’s epic journey from the Shire to Mount Doom, as well the dramatic events experienced by other members of the Fellowship.

I think this is a great addition to the product catalog of the Lord of the Rings LCG. There are those who would only know Tolkien’s work from the movies, having not read any of the books, and this product could interest them, since it is an area they already know about. It could also interest those who know a lot about Middle Earth, as it lets them get directly involved in the story, to delve into it and change it for the better.

Since this LCG is inherently a co-operative game, meaning the players must work together to defeat the game, those players get to team up against and defeat the evil forces,  experience the highs and lows that the Fellowship encounter and either revel in victory or suffer in defeat at the end.

There is no release date for the product yet, as Fantasy Flight Games will  usually announce something well before releasing it, giving little spoilers and glimpses of cards.

The product page can be found here, and the announcement article can be found here.
