Mythical Pokémon Collection – Darkrai Box Review & Giveaway
The 20th anniversary, year-long celebration of the world-wide phenomena that is Pokémon continues into May with the release of the next Mythical Pokémon Collection promo box containing a Promo card of the ‘Pitch-Black’ Pokémon: Darkrai. Darkrai is a much loved, fan favourite legendary Pokémon despite its otherworldly, creepy appearance reflecting its darkness and nightmare design motifs. Its first appearance came in the release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, ushering in the new age of the Pokémon video games on the Nintendo DS. I fondly remember this Pokémon as it appeared in episode 32 of Season 12 of the Pokémon television series, had a fierce battle with main character ‘Ash Ketchum’ and was portrayed in the movie ‘Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai’.
Many Darkrai cards have since been in the Pokémon TCG, and none in the game’s history may be more prolific than Darkrai EX – a card which was highly playable during its entire time in the standard format for its utility, damage output and compatibility with many supporting cards which released alongside it in the set ‘Dark Explorers’. The card saw Jason Klaczynski through to a third World Championship title, effectively demonstrating the strength of the card.
The Darkrai Pokémon Mythical Collection box contains the same items found in the preceding promo boxes, this time featuring Darkrai including:
- The promo box exclusive Darkrai XY-Promo
- A Darkrai Pin
- Two Booster packs from the anniversary set Generations
- A code card for the Pokémon Trading Card Game online to redeem for the Promo Card.
The box itself is shaped the same as the previous boxes with its contents positioned as expected. The black colour scheme of the box stands out to me, matching the featured Pokémon.
The Darkrai XY-Promo card, like the others in the series of promos is a ‘Full-Art’, with an artwork that spans the whole card face. It is in stark contrast to the previous three however, with a befitting illustration exemplifying Darkrai’s ghoulish air through its art-style and colouration. The card depicts Darkrai reaching out towards the viewer, a terrifying and awesome pose, all of which is tied together with a dream-like background.
Looking at the function of Darkrai XY-Promo within the card game, it features an excellent 110 HP for an un-evolving Basic Pokémon, an unfortunate fighting type weakness which may soon be exploited by numerous, new fighting type Pokémon in the most recent set release ‘Fates Collide’, and a handy resistance to Psychic type. The attacks are a mixed bag with the first doing a below average 30 damage for 1 Dark and 1 Colourless energy. The second – Abyssal Sleep – at a costly two Dark and one Colourless energy requirement does 80 damage, with an interesting effect which inflicts sleep, and forces the opponent to flip two coins in order to awaken.
The second attack, ‘Abyssal Sleep’, is an interesting attack effect. It inflicts sleep with only a 25% chance of the opponent being able to break the status and wake up. There is potential for this effect to be used under various locks. Vileplume AOR may be an excellent partner, limiting the opponent’s options and creating a strategy reminiscent of item lock decks from the past which featured similar, disabling effects. While the disabling effect from Darkrai’s attack is not as strong as the one featured in those similar strategies, it’s important to consider the state of the metagame today and whether it could be strong enough to make an impact.
Being that Darkrai is a favourite of mine (for a variety of reasons), I am excited to see the release of this product and am keen to add the contents of this box to my collection.

Squirtle is my favourite!
He was the first starter that I ever chose, I actually wiped my mates save game trying to play for the first time.
He was my wedding topper and I even got him as a tattoo on my wrist. 😀
Anthony smith is my favourite pokemon. 2nd favourite is zapdos
Myuu~~. So many memories with number 151. Ahh it takes me back to 1999. First. My poster only had 150 pkmn. Was confused but hes my fave legendary since. Secondly mew was part of my winning decks during old EX series formats and lastly the versatility it offers for decks over theyears since 2006 – LM ex, both Deltas, prime, the new BW EX, and now the newest one from fate collide which i plan on teching in only deck i find fun online, in one of worst format possible to date, Night March only because it reminds me of Stormfront Gyarados deck. Once again…MYUU~~~ (Mew)
Vaporeon the mermaid dog has been my favourite since I saw the beautiful holographic card with her on it when I was 8. I’ve always wanted pokemon to be real so I could go swimming at the beach with her. I also think its so cool how she can melt into water to hide!
hydreigon, 3 headed dark dragon is beastly and awesome.i also collect them in tcg cause they always give it awesome artwork
Blastoise because who wouldn’t want water cannons that pop out and smash people with water then they get angry and pick up rocks and try to throw them back at you and fail and end up hurting themselves by tripping and then you laugh
Mega Charizard X, he’s black and blue and will fight for you!
Fraligator because when i had Pokemon gold we both made an everlasting friendship. I never put him in the PC. He rarely fainted and stayed with me the entire 700+ hours it took me to catch them all
I actually love darkrai. I love dark type pokemon and his movie is one of my fave pokemon movies!
my favourite has always been psyduck, as i have always suffered from migraines and he just seemed to be the one that fit with me.
My favorite pokemon is Phyduck because he always has a headache just like me lol
Great article Anthony! My favourite Pokémon is Vanilluxe because of a variety of reasons. First off. I love ice cream. Secondly. The etymological origins of “Vanilluxe” come from Vanilla (which I love) and Deluxe (which is hella dope). Also the Vanilluxe card (I think it’s Plasma Freeze or Storm) let’s you flip a lot of coins which most people know by this point is my favourite thing.
– Callum xoxo
Zygard because it’s rare in the game and in the card game
Absol, it’s a dark type that can sense disaster.
Loved my Sandslash back in Blue/Red days. Starters and rares were cool, but sandslash was always there to punch through and dig out of caves when you’re too cheap to escape rope.
Honestly, my favourite Pokémon is Darkrai! I remember first encountering him in the Pokemon Ranger game, and then never letting him leave my team on Pearl after that. Using Dark Void against friends made battling it a real nightmare *badum-tsh*
Arcanine has been one of my favourites since first gen, along with Kingdra, Lucario, Zoroark, Darkrai and Aegislash. So far from the latest gen (in Sun and Moon), I’m liking Rowlet.
I had artwork commissioned of Arcanine and Lucario and it takes pride of place on my wall.
Shiny Charizard – it’s cliche but it’s a fire breathing “dragon” and the colour scheme just looks too cool.
Clefairy. I opened my first pack of cards back in the day and there she was, a sparkling star. Sadly I ended up trading her for what I now believe to be a fake Kabutos. Alas…
Milotic; she’s so regal and elegant.
Mewtwo his famous quote from the first movie had a big impact on me as a child and shaped the way I live my life.
Pikachu is my favourite! He is always that faithful friend that anyone needs to get them through harder times. I even got him tattooed on my forearm as a reminder he is always there.
My favourite Pokemon is got to be Manetric, Hoenn was main region I grew up with and for my 9th Birthday my mum bought me my first Theme Deck from EB Games, little did I know that the blue and yellow Pokemon was to become my favourite Pokemon Manetric
Gardevoir because it’s such a majestic yet destructive force to be reckoned with
I love pickachu. …i know everyone says that…but i love his attitude. He is tough, never gives up, funny, cute and loyal. Pickachu is just the best.
Eevee is my favourite. I’ve always loved it for as long as I can remember, long before my brother and I got the Gameboy games, we had trading cards and when I seen Eevee I just knew then and there that it would be my favourite.
I like tepig because its a cute little fire breathing piglet. I have one in my sapphire game i got for christmas and i always name it bacon when it levels up into emboar
Gengar – Whether you were a fan of pokemon before Ash or not, i fell in love with Reds Gengar, and the rest of the their purple companions episode after episode through ash’s series.
Reds Gengar is the opening scene fighting Nidorino on Ash’s TV.
You can’t get a more cheeky, playful, but so so deadly and sneaky combination ghost type. Just like me 😀
Bulbasaur is my favourite due to the fact he is always under appreciated when compared to the other starters and is a extremely viable Pokemon when fully evolved.
Sableye. I’ve always liked the Ghost types, however I found they had too many weaknesses to bother using. Then came Sableye and its Ghost/Dark type. It looks cool too and just happens to be my favourite colour, purple. 🙂
Gotta love Mewtwo as he was created for the purpose of being controlled but had other plans, that and the first movie is LENGENDARY!
I would say my favourite Pokémon has to be Gengar. I mean who doesn’t love the purple fluff ball.
Sudowoodo, the god the comic relief the battling beast. This pokemon just made are and still makes me giggle, his a quirky individual that really brings relief to whats going on especially in the anime. in the video games his definitely a power pick that can come out of no where. Sudowoodo is a god
My all time favourite is Umbreon. The king of night, and only evolves into the majestic beast when the friendship is maxed. Ever since he was added i loved the concept of evolving pokemon through happiness and at night too.
Thus my love for dark types ever since Umbreon.
I love meowth, the ratbagish cat can do some sneaky things.
