How Game Are You? Couples Edition Review

In any relationship, there are highs and lows and finding new ways to engage with your significant other can be difficult. ‘How Game Are You?’ caught my attention as a game to review, advertising itself as a ‘real life conversation game’ that brings couples closer together. I decided to give it a go and tested the game with my boyfriend to see if it holds up.

Packaged in a simple red and white toned box, its title and specifications are easy to read (including its age rating of 18+) which is important since some topics discussed aren’t suitable for younger audiences. Inside, we have the following:

  • 1x Rulebook
  • 1x Blindfold
  • 1x Game Board
  • 3x Sets of Chilli Decks (Rated from 1-3)
  • 1 Optional 4 Rating Chilli Deck
  • 1 Perform or Pamper Deck
  • 4 x Wooden Tokens

Aim of the Game

To win, a player must reach the ‘finish’ square on the game board. Reading through the rules, ‘How Game Are You?’ has a further incentive to reach this goal: getting a free 1 minute massage along with choosing a Perform or Pamper card for you and your significant other. Now, the types of Perform and Pamper cards in the game include a variety of physical and emotional rewards from a further massage to special date nights.

By getting to know each other in different ways, it helps break the barriers of normal conversation topics and creates new connections through approaching uncomfortable topics to matters of the heart.

Starting off, each player has to recite a pledge to show the other that they will be honest with their responses throughout the game. Once that is done, each player chooses their wooden token and places it in the ‘1’ square on the board.

Players progress in the game by moving their tokens up blocks of numbered squares on the board by answering Chilli Card questions correctly.

By correctly, this means going into detail with topics that might be uncomfortable to touch on. These Chilli card topics range from general trivia, relationships and sex with each card level intensifying the question.

Intensity of each question becomes heightened through being more sexual and emotionally confronting to the player. I feel this is a good challenge to practice talking with your partner in a way that is honest despite having to butt heads with them during certain topics.

Final Thoughts

Overall Rating: 8/10

I thought the game was a great way to get to know my boyfriend better by approaching subjects I feel uncomfortable with and often avoid. My only gripe with the game is the Touch and Trust mechanic of the game does not work with obscure objects not normally found in a room. An example of this would be that I’d pick up a die in the room and my boyfriend would not be able to guess the object correctly. A way to mitigate this is to narrow down the list of objects. Being told to choose a type of object in the room as opposed to a random one will let the player have an easier time guessing what is touching them.

Other than that, I think ‘How Game Are You?’ is well thought out and true to the purpose of the game. I would recommend this game to couples that struggle to communicate with each other as ‘How Game Are You’ does that for you. I feel this would be a great icebreaker for close friends and newly formed couples as well.

How Game Are You? will be arriving on Kickstarter very soon.  Keep an eye on their Facebook Page for updates.
