Will Nash Talks Standard + GPT Brisbane Report

G’day readers! It’s time to have a chat about Standard. Magic: the Gathering’s flagship constructed format has developed rapidly since Pro Tour: Theros dramatically introduced a new theologically inspired keyword into our community’s already swollen colloquial lexicon… Anyway, I am a dark mage at heart, so I figured I might put my ‘devotion’ to black to the test at the Grand Prix Trial held at Ace Comics: Annerley on Sunday the 17th of November. Sundays are a tough sell but it was nice to see 22 players show up for the contest. When all was said and done, Scott Munro emerged victorious, piloting the mighty Esper control deck. Congrats to Scott! For your perusal I have attached the decklists of the top 8 at the end of this article.

But first, in order to shed light on Standard, I thought I might fire some question at top duelist and all-round-good-bloke, Will Nash.

Is there enough diversity in Standard right now?

Yes! There is a lot of diversity among the top tier decks and there is still room for brewing as well. We’ve seen competitive Red-Green, Blue and Black Devotion decks jostle for ascendancy. And then there are the control and aggro pillars represented by Esper and Red Deck Wins respectively. There don’t seem to be any oppressively powerful cards although I think Blood Baron of Vizkopa can be annoying at times.

What is currently your favourite card in Standard?

Domri Rade! Nothing gives me more pleasure than forcing my opponent’s creatures to pick a fight with Boros Reckoner. Domri plays a lot like Modern all-star, Birthing Pod, in that it gives you a steady stream of card advantage and allows you to play a deck full of super sweet creatures.

What types of cards are you hoping to see in the upcoming expansion set: Born of the Gods?

I’m looking forward to the rumoured dual coloured gods. We’ve seen how the mono coloured gods powered up former nobodies like Frostburn Weird and Nightveil Specter. Who knows what hidden gems could be unlocked by dual devotion! Also, Grand Prix: Melbourne (28th of February) is only a short time after the Born of the Gods release date (7th of February) so Australians will be the first to try out the format!

What is the most undervalued card in Standard?

Prophet of Kruphix is pretty crazy and powerful but I think the most undervalued card right now is Underworld Cerberus. That guy is nuts!

Who is the most personable Friday Night Magic grinder in Brisbane?

I’m a big fan of Adrian Preston but Pratik Sati is my favourite. He is a competitive but happy-friendly player and it is always a pleasure to be paired against him. We need more people like these guys to inspire the younger players who are getting into this great game of ours!

Who of these eligible young ladies would you like to take out to dinner? Elspeth, Liliana, Chandra or Serena Williams?

Chandra, pyro-girl! So hot! Liliana would be an interesting date but she’d probably do something crazy like shave my cat…

It looks like Will is spot on with his analysis as the top 8 of the GP:Trial proved diverse indeed. Congrats to these handsome gents!
