Conquest coming – Warhammer 40k style

When Fantasy Flight Games announced that they were putting an end to Warhammer: Invasion, I thought it was because they moved onto Warhammer Diskwars, but I could have been mistaken. It could be because they have moved onto a Warhammer 40,000 living card game, which I didn’t expect at all.

This new LCG is called Warhammer 40,000 Conquest the Card Game. That is quite a long name, I will probably just call it ‘The 40k LCG’ for short. It is set in the Warhammer 40k universe, all dark and gritty and so on. I have read through the release article, which gives a basic run down on how the game works, with a preview of some of the cards, and it sounds pretty interesting. I can see a few similarities in the rules to the Call of Cthulhu LCG, but those are only small, and there are otherwise huge differences to the other LCGs. You can read all about the rules here on this page, to get a general idea of what is going on with it, and that page should also have any new updates that will be put up in the coming months.

There will be 7 factions, one for each of the main groups in the miniatures games. So you will have things like the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar and so on. Deck building will revolve around the main Commander card of your deck, but you will be able to splash in cards from other factions, with a few restrictions. The image below shows all the factions, and the factions to the left and right of a given faction are allies, and will be able to be used in that deck. So, for example, if you chose Dark Eldar as your main faction, you could splash in cards from Chaos and Eldar.

One of the biggest attractions to me with this game is the 40k universe. I have no interest in the miniatures game for 40k, I’ve tried it and I don’t like the rules, but the lore behind it is huge and very interesting. That whole dark universe full of death and terror, a mix of half known technology, aliens and supernatural powers and entities. I’ve read a few of the Black Library books and played the 40k role playing game, so I will probably end up having a look at this game when it comes out.

I know several people who are already interested in this, beyond myself, but there is no exact release date yet, so we will have to wait. The announcement page puts release at third quarter 2014. Do you want it? Can you wait that long? Let us know.
